How to use JotNot’s batch processing feature

We launched an exciting, new feature in JotNot 3.0 called Batch Processing.  If you have a multipage document to scan, this feature will save you time and frustration.   Previous versions required you to capture and process each page sequentially.  With Batch Processing, you capture all the images upfront and process in one step at the end.  This makes the scanning experience much better.

So here is how it works:

After you take a picture, JotNot will display the Select View.  From here just tap the “+” icon in the bottom right corner instead of hitting the Process button.  Keep doing this until you have captured all the pages.  Then you can tap the Process button once on the last page.  JotNot will enhance all the pages one after the other and store the results in a nice, superfine PDF.

One word of advice.   Make sure you select the corners on each image before you take the next picture.  Also, try to set the default paper size for the document so that all the pages are the same size.  Tap the paper size button in the select view to do this.  You’ll only need to set the default document size once on the first image typically.

Hope this helps.  Now go out and take advantage of this great, new feature.

Happy scanning,

Alec

How to fax all pages in a document

Last year, we launched a faxing service for JotNot users.  Now, you can scan a document and fax it directly from JotNot itself.  Our goal is to offer a reliable, convenient faxing service at a fair price.    Those who need to send a fax every so often will find JotNot much easier and cheaper than Kinko’s.

JotNot’s user interface is flexible in that it allows you to send both multipage and single page faxes.  This might confuse some users, so, hopefully, the explanation below clarifies the difference.

To fax multiple pages:

  • Swipe to reveal options for the document from the main menu
• Tap the action sheet icon to display sharing options
  • Select the Fax option
  • Fill out the fax form and hit “Send”

JotNot should send all the pages in the document.   You can also send all pages by faxing from the Page List view for the document, which you can get to by tapping the document from the main menu.

To fax a single page:

  • Drill down to the Page Detail view for the page you want to fax
• Tap the action sheet icon to display the page sharing options
  • Select the Fax option
  • Fill out the form and hit “Send”

In general, initiating a sharing action from the Page Detail view will apply that action to the current page only.  So if you want to email a single page, you will need to drill down to the page detail and select the email sharing option instead of fax.  Initiating a sharing action from the main menu or the page list view will apply that action to the entire document itself.

Hope this helps clarify how to fax using JotNot.

Alec

Adjusting File Size

Some of you have asked for instructions on how to adjust the size of the files that JotNot creates.  By default, JotNot sets the size based on the most common use cases for scanning.  But there are situations where you might need more control over file size.

For example, say you’re scanning a 20 page document that you need to email over a 3G cell network.   The default size setting could produce a file that is several MB in size.  Sending this file over the cell network might take a some time.   It might be much better in this case to adjust the file size down so that it will transmit more easily over the network.

There are two slider controls for adjusting file size:

  1. Resolution
  2. JPEG Quality

Both of these controls are accessible under the Settings->Enhancement Options menu. I usually recommend starting with the JPEG Quality slider.  Moving this to the left can dramatically lower the size without affecting the quality much at all.  If this doens’t give you enough reduction you can also adjust the Resolution control.  Moving the Resolution slider to the left will lower the resolution of the resulting images (as the name suggests).

I hope this helps.  If you have any questions feel free to email us at support at mobitech3000.com

Renaming Documents

With JotNot, you can scan a document and give it any name you want.  This can be a really helpful feature to keep you organized.  The process is simple.

1) From the main menu, select the document of interest by tapping on it.  This will take you to the Page List view.

2) In the Page List view, tap the icon in the bottom toolbar that looks like a square with a diagonal pencil across it - this is the rename document button.
3) Tapping the rename document button will display an Alert Dialog with a text field.  You can type any name you want in this text field.
4) Tap OK to save the new name or Cancel to keep the old name.
I hope this helps.  Please email us at support AT jotnot DOT com if you have questions.

Reordering Pages

We’ve received a lot questions recently on how to reorder pages in a document scanned with JotNot.  Here is how you do it.
1) From the main document list, select the document of interest by tapping on it.  This takes you to the Page List view where all the pages in the document are listed.
2) Click the “Edit” button in the upper righthand corner.  This will put the app in editing mode.  Now you can reorder the pages.
3) To reorder, find the table cell associated with the page you want to move.  Tap and hold on the righthand side of this cell and drag it to the location where you want it.
4) When you have finished reordering the pages the way you want them, click the “Done” button in the upper righthand corner.
I hope this helps.  If you have questions, feel free to email us at our  support address.

When you use JotNot to scan a multipage document, you should consider setting a default paper size for the entire document.  This is especially useful when all pages in the document are the same size.  Setting a default paper size will ensure that you get the results you expect every time.  The video above gives a demonstration on how to do this.

JotNot provides an easy way for you to set the strength of its image enhancement algorithm.   By default, JotNot uses the strongest enhancement setting available.  In its strongest setting, the algorithm will try to identify the background of the scanned page and set it to white.  With a good source image, this algorithm can produce some amazing results especially on the 3GS.   If you are using an older iPhone (1st Gen or 3G) or are scanning documents with very faint text, the algorithm can sometimes be too aggressive in removing detail from the original image.  If this happens, you can try dialing back the strength of the algorithm to get quality results every time regardless of the source image.  The only expense with dialing back on the enhancement is that the results tend to be a little bit noisier.   Take a look at the video to see a demonstration of how to set this control.

JotNot provides many different ways to save and share your scanned documents.  One method that is often overlooked by users is JotNot’s ability to save scanned images down to the iPhone’s camera roll.  This can be an easy way to get your data off the iPhone every time you sync with your Mac or PC.    This video walks you through how to use this handy feature.

Did you know that you can use JotNot to convert an image into an editable text document?   This video will show you how to do it by taking advantage of the Google Docs integration available in JotNot 2.1.
